Un buen regalo para el día del profesor

Desde que tomé a mi jefatura hace 3 años (en 8vo), mi meta fue ayudar a convertirlos en las mejores personas que pudiesen ser. Una de las muchas ideas que he trabajado con ello es el valor de lo real, lo significativo por sobre los voluptuoso pero vanal. Es así que este año el día del profesor fue uno de los mejores que he tenido. De hecho el día asignado para la celebración ellos se acercaron y me dijeron que no podían hacerlo ese día corriendolo para la próxima semana. Obviamente yo no tuve ningún problema con eso y cambiamos la celebración por un juego de voleibol genial. La pasamos como nunca. Todos unidos y felices, sin grupos.
A la semana seguiente me hicieron una completada y el regalo fue una foto tamaño gigante en un cuadro que ellos se habían sacado en la playa. Aparecían todos. El regalo me sorprendió ya que no esperaba aún un gesto tan significativo por parte de ellos. La sorpresa fue muy buena. Me quedan aún dos años con ellos y veo con mucho orgullo de que están creciendo y madurando en una forma positiva. Gracias mis alumnos por el gran regalo que me han dado este año... y por la foto también.

Halloween, A brief story.

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.
Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.
The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."
On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.
When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.
The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en"). The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween.
During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rules the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday.
The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.
But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween.
The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Samhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.

English, a frustrating class?

There was a piece of news occurred weeks ago about a student who stabbed a teacher of English during a class (see terra.cl). All this has made me think about how frustrating it could be the English class and other subjects about espcific knowledge like chemistry and physics, among others.
The question is how much responsability we, the teachers, do have before this frustration. We teach a new language to adolescents who don't manage even their ownmother tongue. We work with abstract ideas like phrasal verbs (verb + preposition) in which the meaning changes from the original verb. Reading comprehension is escential, but we encounter with students who don't have reading techniques, in fact, many of them just don't read books. And so on, I could make a long list of events that became English in a 'difficult' subject to study. Moreover, I must add the external factors, I mean, teachers whos sometimes don't give enough time to go beyond looking for a real understanding of the student. There are others who haven't changed their strategies nor activities or some others who don't forgive the mistakes, giving a low mark without making any feedback.
Summarizing, i know that the most of the high school students don't like English or don't even know how important isto know another language nowadays. I think the today adolescent live the philosophy called 'to get something whithout efforts'. They like comfort and that produces lazy people. Maybe the fault is shared between themselves and their family environment... but, how much responsible are we in that behaviour?

Cambiar el chip de un recreo a otro

Creo no ser el único profesor de inglés que trabaja en diferentes ciclos. En mi caso la mayoría de mis horas las tengo en Educación Media, que las complemento con horas en cursos de Básica, primeros y segundos.
La primera impresión que puedo dar es que es muy cansandor cambiar el chip de un curso a otro. De un recreo a otro paso de trabajar con un cuarto medio a un primero básico. El Michael Rossel es el mismo, pero la metodología cambia sideralmente.
Esta queja del momento se transforma con los minutos en clases en algo super positivo para mi. Es este cambio lo que me mantiene activo metodologicamente. Me obliga a rediseñarme y abuscar maneras más interesantes de trabajar con mkis alumnos. Los básicos me ayudan cualquier cantidad. A veces he hecho experimentos como mostrar material de Básica a jóvenes de Media y la respuesta al trabajo es muy similar. Eso me demuestra que quizas los profesores de Media nos hemos quedado mucho en la clase del speech o la frontal pensando que mostrandole actividades de "cabros chicos" a los jóvenes, éstos no responderían. Pero saben que, si lo hacen.

Los profesores de Inglés en Chile no hablan Inglés.

Fuerte declaración que apareció en las noticias hace unos días. Mi pregunta es: ¿será tan necesario hacer una defensa ciega gritando a todo el mundo que eso no es así? Pensemos bien las cosas. Primero, esta encuesta es nacional y no local (de Arica). Segundo, Sabemos que hay muchos profesores de Inglés titulados que no están ejerciendo como tal y se han dedicado a otras empresas por ser estas más beneficiosas monetariamente. Tercero, hay muchos colegios, especialmente en el sur, que están contratando a personas que hablan o dicen dominar el idioma inglés ya que no hay suficientes profesores titulados disponibles. Cuarto, sabemos de la proliferación de varias universidades que han instalado sucursales en regiones ofreciendo la carrera de Pedagogía en Inglés para estudiarla el fin de semana, o sea, carreras express con un bajo, o por lo menos, discutible nivel de exigencia en clases y en las practicas profesionales. Y por último, las encuestas son opiniones no más. Puede ser que esto si este suciendo en gran parte de Chile y nosotros no lo notamos ya que casi el 100% de profesores de Inglés que trabajan en Arica han salido de la Universidad de Tarapacá, un aval muy fuerte teniendo en cuenta que es una de las universidades con la Carrera de Pedagogía en Inglés con más prestigio en Chile.
Conclusión: Chile preocupense de este problema que si es real, y no se preocupen por nosotros en Arica ya que tal problema hace rato lo tenemos solucionado.

Darse el lujo de ser Formador

Siento que de verdad la educación esta cambiando, los alumnos de ahora no son como nosotros eramos antes, y la forma de llegar a ellos debe ser por lo tanto otra. Estos dos últimos años trabajando con alumnos de Educación Media, me he dado cuenta que debo ser flexible a la hora de saber como y cuando entregar la materia. Me refiero a que es necesario a veces detenerse en esta euforia de querer entregar prontos conocimientos a nuestros alumnos y ver quienes son ellos. La última vez que pare mi clase de inglés para compartir una reflexión con ellos acerca de su futuro, no sólo profesional, sino también de vida, me dejó tan contento con el trabajo que hago. No sólo soy un 'entregador' de información y conocimientos, también soy un formador, un guía, esa cuarta persona más importante en la vida de ellos después de sus padres y familia.
El sentir que a parte de conocimientos soy capaz de entregar luz a una vida que se desarrolla me hace sentir que mi pega es la mejor.

Presentación

Hola. Mi nombre es Michael Rossel. Soy de Chile y vivo en la ciudad de Arica. Soy profesor titulado de Inglés y me dedico a eso por más de 5 años a la fecha.
La creación de este blog es hablar de las diferentes experiencias, trabajos, metodologías, proezas y condoros que he pasado siendo porfesor de aula.
Bueno, esta era sólo una corta presentación.
